Klopp had to ‘fight’ Liverpool star to make him take time off after World Cup

first_img“It was a hard fight to convince him that he needed a holiday,” the Reds boss said of his conversation with Henderson.“I knew it would happen.“On the phone I said ‘crazy’. Jordan needs a holiday so that means August 5 he will be back.“Dejan had a party in Croatia and played a day later, so he will be back on August 6.“That would mean five days training after three weeks’ holiday. I hope we are in a situation where we don’t need to think about using these two.”Defender Trent Alexander-Arnold could be involved against the Hammers, though, with the 19-year-old appearing in only one of England’s games at the World Cup. 3 3 Jordan Henderson was a key part of England’s historic run in Russia Jurgen Klopp with his Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed he had to persuade club captain Jordan Henderson to take time off after the World Cup, as he was so keen to start pre-season with the Reds. 3 GETTY Henderson returned home from Russia with the rest of the England squad on Sunday after the Three Lions’ run to the semi-finals and fourth-placed finish. With the new Premier League season kicking off in a little over three weeks – August 10 – the midfielder was apparently ready to get cracking with the club’s pre-season preparation. But, after racking up a total of 53 appearances for club and country last term, Klopp said he had to ‘fight’ his skipper over the phone to ensure he got some well-earned rest.It means Henderson, along with Croatia defender and World Cup finalist Dejan Lovren, is likely to sit out of Liverpool’s opener against West Ham at Anfield on August 12. Trent Alexander-Arnold made one appearance for England at the World Cup – against Belgium in the group stages “With Trent I have a special agreement,” said Klopp.“He wanted to be in earlier as well. As he’s very young I said ‘OK, have two weeks’ holiday and then we’ll speak and see’.“If you asked Trent he would be good to join us in Evian (for their training camp). But I’m not sure I will do that. I want to have them desperately but the season is really long.”last_img read more
