Bishop Long stepping down

About a year later, the Atlanta megachurch pastor is headed for divorce and stepping away from the pulpit.Long announced Sunday at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church that he needed a break from preaching to focus on his family. The hiatus leaves New Birth, which once boasted 25 000 members, at a crossroads, its reputation battered and membership dwindling. Their pasts inextricably linked for nearly a generation, both Long and his church face an uncertain future.“A church is bigger than its pastor,” said Goldie Taylor, who has attended New Birth in the past.“For too long, the New Birth family has acted as if it is smaller than its pastor. Its challenge going forward will be its ability to flip that and become a church without walls again.”For many members, Long has been the only pastor they have ever known. He became senior pastor in 1987, taking the helm of a flock of only a few hundred members. Not long after he arrived, the former Ford salesman and Honeywell executive dismissed New Birth’s board of directors and took unilateral control of the church, ensuring that he would be the one to determine the date of his departure.New Birth grew quickly under its charismatic, dynamic young leader, swelling to 8 000 members in five years. A decade later New Birth boasted 18 000 members and the church paid cash for the land and sprawling property it currently occupies in DeKalb County – including a 10 000-seat sanctuary. In addition to its Lithonia, Georgia headquarters, the church has satellites in several cities including Miami, Charlotte and Denver, and television and international ministries. Many who joined the church under Long’s tenure were attracted to the prosperity gospel that he preached and practised. It was a message that mirrored an emerging black middle class in and around Atlanta. Unlike the traditional Southern Baptist preacher, Long owned a $350 000 Bentley and private jet, lived in a $1.4 million house with six bedrooms and nine bathrooms, adorned himself with diamond jewellery and read his sermons from an iPad.Long’s spiritual swagger inspired a loyal and protective congregation. In September 2010, when accusations swirled that he used his lavish lifestyle to seduce four young men into sexual relationships in exchange for cars, clothes and trips, New Birth members supported their embattled leader, who vowed he was innocent and would fight the cases.Long settled out of court eight months later for an undisclosed amount and has never admitted any wrongdoing. After that, some changed their opinion of him.“Once the money was paid, it was like you’re hiding something,” said Donielle Marshall, who joined New Birth as a college student in 1999.“Did you lie to us? I look at him as just a common man, full of fault, but also a disgrace.” (AP)Nation News Sharing is caring!last_img read more

Newton finds role for Miami after mother’s death just months before

first_img Facebook Twitter Google+ Ja’Quan Newton said he didn’t know much about the disease, he just thought it would go away. His mother, Lisa Brown, was diagnosed with breast cancer in Newton’s sophomore year of high school. She went through chemotherapy for three years, still attending all of her son’s basketball games and still considered “team mom” by Newton’s teammates. As her health deteriorated, the basketball court became Newton’s sanctuary.“When I played basketball I knew this was the place where I could get all my problems out of the way,” Newton said. “It was the place that with all the other things I’m going through, I don’t have to think about because I’m just playing basketball.”Brown passed away the morning before Newton and his Neumann-Goretti (Pennsylvania) High School teammates were going to take the floor in the PIAA Class AAA championship game.AdvertisementThis is placeholder textHe scored 33 points in the final and it would be the last game he suited up for before beginning the next chapter of his basketball career with Miami. Newton has appeared in all but one game for the Hurricanes (12-5, 2-2 Atlantic Coast), which will visit Syracuse (14-5, 5-1) on Saturday at 4 p.m.His new coach, Jim Larranaga, said he had his eye on Newton since before his junior year and knows the success Newton is capable of while dealing with personal hardships.“Ja’Quan is a very, very good basketball player,” Larranaga said. “He’s got good size, good ball-handling skills and he’s very good at taking the ball to the basket.”While picking up the tactical aspects of basketball from his father, Newton said it was his mother who shaped him into the competitor he is as a Division I basketball player, and the leader he was as a captain for Neumann-Goretti.Brown always told her son to respect others because big things would happen if he stuck to that. With that in mind, Newton knew the best way he could pay respect to his mom.“I knew I had to play in that game because that’s what she would’ve wanted,” Newton said. “She wouldn’t have wanted me to not play.”Newton told his head coach Carl Arrigale the day his mother passed that he needed to go to practice and be with his teammates. Arrigale assured him he should stay home with his family; he said he didn’t think basketball should take precedent. But it did, and in the hours leading up to the game the next day, Arrigale said he decided it would be Newton’s day and that he would run the show.Newton tried, at least, right from the start.“Ja’Quan went right up and took one of the first shots of the game,” Arrigale said. “It was a mid-range jump shot from the left or right wing and it wasn’t even close.”But after the early gaffe, Newton went on a roll to score 27 points in regulation — including the game-tying free throw with 1:19 left.As the moment grows, so does Newton, Arrigale said. He sank four free throws and his team’s only basket in overtime to seal a 64-57 win. Newton checked out of the game in the final seconds, and as he sank back in the folding chair on the sidelines, he broke down to tears. The rest of his team and his family consoled him and were brought to tears themselves as the final seconds wound down. Regardless, if Brown missed the championship game or the game before, when he became the all-time leading scorer at Neumann-Goretti, everyone knew they’d give their former “team mom” exactly what she wanted: a win.“Everything that unfolded was like a movie. It gave me the chills,” Arrigale said. “It’s still giving me the chills.” Comments Published on January 23, 2015 at 1:14 am Contact Connor: [email protected] | @connorgrossmanlast_img read more

Public works deals should go back to the drawing board says Solís

Solís said that more time was needed to analyze the project and review the loan’s terms. The Costa Rican president also asked Xi to renegotiate the troubled Moín oil refinery project. Solís said another meeting would be needed to address some of the current contract’s “great inconsistencies,” according to a statement from Casa Presidencial. The refinery project was frozen after the Comptroller General’s Office discovered a conflict of interest between the project’s management and the company that carried out the proposed refinery’s environmental impact study. The ensuing scandal forced Jorge Villalobos, then executive president of the National Oil Refinery, to resign in June 2013.Casa Presidencial said that Xi would consider Solís’ proposals and take them up in high-level talks to be held in Beijing, the Chinese capital, sometime in early 2015.The Chinese president reportedly expressed interest in cooperating with Costa Rica on a wide range of topics, including development projects for ports and highways, special economic zones, the defense of natural resources, and taking greater advantage of the two countries’ free trade agreement, especially in regards to Costa Rican fishing.Solís traveled to Brasilia Tuesday for a CELAC meeting as the president pro tempore of the pan-Latin American organization. On Thursday, he is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil, with whom he previously expressed interest in deepening economic and political ties.
